Is MIT or Carnegie Mellon worth the cost for a computer science degree?

Neither MIT nor Carnegie Mellon is worth taking on unmanageable debt for an undergraduate computer science degree; between the two, MIT deserves priority only if its net price is close to Carnegie Mellon’s or substantially lower. Both provide exceptional CS teaching, recruiting, alumni networks, and access to ambitious peers, but the career advantage does not reliably justify a large gap in borrowing.

MIT’s CS education also benefits from unusually easy access to mathematics, engineering, entrepreneurship, and research across the Institute. For a student whose aid package makes MIT affordable, the academic and professional opportunities are hard to match.

Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science is likewise among the most respected undergraduate CS environments, with deep strengths in artificial intelligence, robotics, systems, human-computer interaction, and software engineering. Employers recruit heavily there, and its focused CS culture can be a real advantage for students who want intensive technical coursework from the start. But its financial aid package should be evaluated carefully against the family’s actual four-year cost, including expected loans, travel, insurance, and annual price increases.

Compare the official net-price estimates and final aid offers, not prestige or sticker price. A manageable amount of federal borrowing is very different from private loans or debt that would force your family to sacrifice retirement savings. For CS, strong skills, internships, projects, and performance matter enormously after graduation; avoiding excessive debt preserves far more flexibility than a marginal difference in institutional name recognition.
