Is MIT or Columbia worth the cost for college?

I’m a high school senior deciding whether to apply to MIT or Columbia, and I’m trying to understand whether attending either school is worth the overall cost. I’m especially interested in how much the value of the degree depends on the student’s goals rather than the school’s reputation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that MIT offers a deeply technology- and engineering-centered undergraduate experience in Cambridge, while Columbia pairs a broad research university education with daily access to New York City’s industries, culture, and internships. MIT is especially compelling for students who want intensive STEM training, hands-on building, and a campus culture centered on science and technology; Columbia can be especially valuable for students who want to connect academics with fields such as finance, journalism, public policy, the arts, medicine, or entrepreneurship in New York.

Your actual cost matters far more than the published cost of attendance. Both institutions have substantial need-based financial aid and state that they meet demonstrated financial need for admitted students, though each family’s result will differ. Run each school’s net price calculator with your parent or guardian before treating either as unaffordable. Avoid taking on large private loans simply for the name: a degree’s financial value is reduced quickly when debt limits your post-graduation choices.

The value also depends heavily on what you do while enrolled. At MIT, a student who uses research labs, project teams, internships, faculty connections, and the Boston-area tech ecosystem can leave with an unusually strong technical portfolio. At Columbia, a student who deliberately uses New York for internships, part-time work, alumni networking, and field-specific experiences can gain advantages that are hard to replicate on a more isolated campus. If MIT or Columbia costs close to what your family can responsibly pay, either can justify the investment for a student whose goals match its opportunities. If the price requires burdensome borrowing, choose the option that lets you pursue the same goals with more financial freedom; the reputation alone is not worth major debt.
