Is Drexel or UVA better for co-op opportunities?

The central tradeoff is structure versus flexibility: Drexel builds extended, full-time paid work placements into many undergraduate plans, while UVA offers career support, internships, and a smaller formal co-op pathway without making co-op the defining feature of the undergraduate experience.

Drexel’s Steinbright Career Development Center coordinates the co-op system, including employer relationships, preparation, job search processes, and advising. Co-op is especially embedded in fields such as engineering, business, computing, design, and health-related areas, and students can graduate with a résumé that includes multiple significant roles. The tradeoff is that the calendar and academic sequence are more prescribed, and a five-year path may not appeal to everyone.

UVA has strong internship recruiting, career fairs, alumni connections, and school-specific career offices, particularly through areas such as Engineering, McIntire, and the College. UVA Engineering also has a formal cooperative education option, but it is not as broad or central to campus life as Drexel’s program. Many UVA students gain work experience through summer internships, research, and semester opportunities, which can be excellent but require more individual planning and initiative.

For a student whose top priority is accessible, structured, and substantial co-op experience, Drexel is the clearer choice. UVA can lead to excellent internships and professional outcomes, but Drexel offers the more established undergraduate co-op infrastructure and the more reliable path to multiple extended work placements.
