Is the University of Maryland or Fordham better for preparing for law school?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and cost: Fordham places you in New York City, with unusually direct access to law firms, courts, nonprofits, and legal internships, while the University of Maryland offers a large public-university experience near Washington, D.C. Both can prepare you very well for law school because neither is a pipeline where the school name alone determines admission. Your GPA, LSAT performance, rigorous writing and analytical coursework, recommendations, and sustained involvement will matter far more.

Fordham can be especially compelling for a student who wants to pursue internships during the academic year in New York and values smaller classes and closer faculty access. Its strengths in liberal arts, business, and urban-policy-related opportunities can support many legal interests. The main caution is debt: paying a large undergraduate premium can limit flexibility when law school itself is expensive.

Maryland offers broad majors, extensive research opportunities, and proximity to federal agencies, policy organizations, advocacy groups, and courts in the D.C. area. It can be an excellent setting for students interested in government, public policy, international affairs, criminal justice, or STEM-related legal fields. At a large university, though, you will need to be more proactive about building faculty relationships, finding pre-law guidance, and seeking internships.

For most students, Maryland is the better law-school preparation choice when it is meaningfully more affordable, especially for an in-state student. Fordham earns the edge when its New York access, academic environment, and financial aid make the cost manageable and you are ready to use the city consistently for legal experience.
