Is UMD or Yale better for preparing for law school?

The biggest practical tradeoff is Yale’s unusually intimate undergraduate academic environment and national name recognition versus UMD’s potential cost advantage and exceptional access to government, policy, and legal internships in the Washington-Baltimore area. For law school admissions, your college GPA and LSAT score will matter far more than the undergraduate institution on their own. Minimizing undergraduate debt also matters because law school can be expensive and need-based aid at Yale can make its actual price very different from its sticker price.

Yale offers strong preparation through small seminars, substantial writing and research opportunities, close faculty relationships, and a residential-college system that can make it easier to find mentors. Those relationships can lead to detailed recommendation letters, which are important in law school applications. Its course offerings in political science, history, ethics, economics, philosophy, and related fields are deep, but law schools do not require any particular major.

UMD can prepare you very well, especially if you take advantage of honors courses, research, writing-intensive classes, pre-law advising, and internships. Its location creates practical opportunities with Maryland government, courts, nonprofits, congressional offices, federal agencies, and policy organizations. A student who earns an excellent GPA, develops strong writing skills, and posts a high LSAT score at UMD can be a highly competitive law school applicant.

Yale is the stronger choice for law-school preparation if the net cost is financially manageable. UMD becomes the more sensible choice if it is substantially less expensive after aid, since avoiding debt can give you greater flexibility when applying to and financing law school.
