Its Maine location puts students much closer to the kinds of mountains, lakes, forests, and winter recreation that support frequent outdoor weekends, while Waterville itself has nearby trail systems such as Quarry Road Trails. Colby’s outdoor programming also makes it relatively practical to find trips and companions for activities ranging from paddling to backcountry outings.

Colby fits a student who wants the outdoors to be a regular, higher-adventure part of college life. Central Maine provides access to the Belgrade Lakes region, state parks, ski areas, and longer hiking destinations, though a car or organized trip is often useful for the most ambitious excursions. The campus setting is also more rural and nature-oriented than William & Mary’s.

William & Mary still has worthwhile options for someone who values accessible, lower-key outdoor time. The College Woods and Lake Matoaka area provide trails, wooded walks, and water-based recreation close to campus, and Williamsburg’s proximity to places such as Jamestown offers additional opportunities to explore. Coastal areas and state parks are reachable for day trips, but the immediate landscape is flatter and less suited to mountain hiking or a rugged camping culture.
