Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or the University of Michigan better for becoming a registered nurse?

For a student whose clear goal is to become a registered nurse directly after college, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is the more appropriate choice. Michigan’s School of Nursing offers a traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with nursing coursework and supervised clinical education designed to prepare graduates for the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. It also provides the advantages of a major academic medical center and an established nursing-school network.

UIUC does not offer a traditional undergraduate BSN program on its Urbana-Champaign campus. You could attend UIUC while completing prerequisite science courses, but you would then need to apply separately to a BSN, accelerated BSN, or entry-level master’s nursing program elsewhere before becoming eligible for RN licensure. That route can work for someone who wants to explore another undergraduate major first, but it adds an additional admissions step and often additional time and tuition.

UIUC could fit someone who wants a broader undergraduate experience in a field such as health sciences, psychology, biology, or public health before deciding on nursing. But for the specific objective of becoming an RN as efficiently and directly as possible, Michigan’s BSN is the clearer path.
