The surrounding community has fewer major hospital systems than Miami, so there may be fewer specialty settings, but getting to a nearby opportunity can be less intimidating.

University of Miami is compelling for a student who wants access to a much larger clinical network and can be proactive about transportation and applications. Its Miller School of Medicine, UHealth system, and nearby Jackson Health System place students near major academic medicine, specialty care, and a diverse urban patient population. Those settings can expose undergraduates to more types of clinical work, public health, and medical research.

The main practical drawback is that the undergraduate campus in Coral Gables is separate from the medical campus in Miami’s Health District. University shuttle options and public transit can help, but reaching a hospital opportunity may require more planning than it would at UIUC. Hospital volunteer positions at Miami-area institutions can also be competitive and may have fixed shifts, onboarding requirements, and limited openings.

Choose UIUC if reliable, low-cost access to local clinical sites matters most at the outset. Choose Miami if you are prepared to navigate a larger city and want the breadth of opportunities associated with an academic medical center and safety-net hospital system.
