Athletics matter at UCSB, particularly men’s soccer, basketball, and volleyball, and students show up with recognizable Gaucho energy for high-profile games. The school’s smaller scale relative to Berkeley and its geographically concentrated student life make it easier for excitement to spread across campus. Spirit at UCSB tends to feel casual, participatory, and connected to the broader beach-town college experience.

UC Berkeley has deeper and more nationally visible athletic traditions, especially around Cal football, the Big Game, and long-standing rituals such as the Rally Committee and card stunts.
