Berkeley suits students who get energized by having many different options: concerts and shows, museums, food neighborhoods, independent bookstores, sporting events, street fairs, hikes in the Berkeley Hills, and day trips across the Bay. Downtown Berkeley BART and local transit make it realistic to leave campus without a car, though exploring the broader Bay Area does take planning and can be expensive. Santa Barbara fits students who would rather have a relaxed, sunny, outdoors-oriented routine close to home. Isla Vista gives UCSB a distinctive weekend atmosphere because so many students live and socialize within a compact area. Downtown Santa Barbara, Goleta, and spots such as the harbor are accessible, but the off-campus scene is less urban and less varied than Berkeley’s.
