Florida State vs Rutgers for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Rutgers gives you a stronger CS ecosystem and better access to nearby internship markets, while Florida State can offer a more affordable, lower-pressure college experience depending on your costs and preferences. For undergraduate CS specifically, Rutgers usually has the edge because it has a larger, more established computer science presence, stronger proximity to New York and New Jersey tech employers, and broader recruiting advantages for internships during the school year.

Academically, Rutgers is the more convincing choice for CS. Its department is bigger, the course ecosystem is deeper, and the school’s overall research activity creates more options if you may want grad school later. That matters because undergrads benefit not just from classes, but from having more faculty, more specialized electives, and more peers seriously focused on computing.

For internships and first-job outcomes, location helps Rutgers a lot. Being near the New York City corridor and a dense set of East Coast employers makes it easier to access internships, networking, and part-time or semester opportunities without relying only on summer recruiting. Florida State can still get students to good outcomes, but it does not have the same natural geographic advantage for CS recruiting.

Florida State is not a bad option, especially if the cost difference is significant or if you strongly prefer the campus environment. You can absolutely build a successful CS path there through projects, internships, and strong grades.

I would lean Florida State only if it is meaningfully cheaper for you or if you know you would thrive much more there personally. Otherwise, Rutgers is the better bet for computer science.
