William & Mary vs Fordham for city access: which one is better if I want easy access to a city?

The biggest practical tradeoff is immediate city access versus a more separate college-town setting. Fordham is woven into New York City life in a way William & Mary is not, especially at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan and even at Rose Hill in the Bronx, which has direct subway and rail access. William & Mary is in Williamsburg, which is attractive and walkable but much smaller, and students usually need more planning if they want a bigger-city outing.

For everyday student life, Fordham clearly feels more connected to a city. At Lincoln Center, you step out into Manhattan, so restaurants, internships, performances, and errands are part of normal weekly life rather than a special trip. Rose Hill is more traditional and campus-based, but students still have regular access to the city through public transit, so going off campus on a weekend is easy and common.

William & Mary has off-campus options, but they are not city options in the same sense. Colonial Williamsburg, local shops, and nearby restaurants give you things to do, but it is much more of a contained college-town experience. Richmond and Norfolk are the nearest bigger urban areas, and neither functions like an effortless extension of campus life for most students.

If your priority is being able to leave campus casually and have a real city at your fingertips on a normal weekend, Fordham is the better choice by a wide margin. William & Mary can be a good fit if you want a classic residential campus with some nearby activity, but for everyday city access, Fordham is the one that matches what you described.
