UC Berkeley vs. Stony Brook for engineering: which is better for undergrad engineering?

I’m a high school junior trying to compare these two schools for engineering, especially for the undergrad experience. UC Berkeley seems stronger overall, but Stony Brook looks like a solid and more affordable option.

UC Berkeley is the stronger undergraduate engineering option. Its College of Engineering has broader national reputation, deeper ties to major tech and engineering employers, and an unusually dense ecosystem of labs, design teams, startups, and nearby industry in the Bay Area. For most engineering fields, that translates into more course depth, more selective peer collaboration, and wider recruiting visibility.

For career outcomes, Berkeley benefits from very strong employer recognition and location. Recruiters in software, hardware, biotech, clean energy, consulting, and quantitative fields know the program well, and the alumni network is powerful both in California and nationally. Stony Brook can still lead to excellent outcomes, especially if you graduate with strong internships and projects, but Berkeley tends to open more doors automatically.

The biggest real argument for Stony Brook is value. If the cost difference is large, Stony Brook can be the smarter decision because it is a solid engineering school and engineering outcomes depend heavily on what you do there. But in a straight comparison of undergrad engineering quality, Berkeley comes out ahead.
