UC Berkeley gives you a more nationally visible engineering name and unusually deep proximity to Bay Area startups, major tech firms, and top research labs, but it also tends to be more competitive day to day for classes, clubs, and some opportunities. Ohio State offers a large, well-resourced engineering environment where it can be easier to build relationships, get involved early, and navigate undergrad life with a bit less pressure.

For engineering quality, both are legitimate choices, but Berkeley carries more weight nationally in engineering circles, especially in fields like EECS, computer engineering, and some research-heavy areas. That matters most if you think you may want highly selective grad school options, certain top-tier tech recruiting pipelines, or to work on the coasts right after graduation. Ohio State is still well respected, especially in the Midwest, and its engineering college has strong industry connections, a broad range of majors, and plenty of hands-on opportunities.

For internships and research, look past the headline name and ask how easy it will be for you to actually participate. Berkeley has extraordinary access to research and employers, but you may need to be more proactive because many ambitious students are competing for the same labs, teams, and recruiting attention. At Ohio State, there are also major employers, research centers, and project teams, and students can sometimes get involved sooner simply because the environment is less compressed.

School name matters after graduation, but not in a simple way. Berkeley’s name is immediately stronger across the country and abroad, especially in tech and engineering-heavy spaces. Ohio State’s name is powerful too, particularly with large employers and alumni networks, but it does not carry quite the same engineering-specific signal.

The most useful way to decide is to compare cost, your intended major, and where you want to work. If Berkeley is affordable and you want the highest-ceiling engineering brand with direct access to Bay Area opportunity, it is the more compelling option. If Ohio State is significantly cheaper or offers a more manageable environment where you can stand out more easily, that can be the smarter undergraduate choice.
