UC Berkeley vs. Stony Brook for undergraduate research: which is better?

UC Berkeley has the edge for undergraduate research overall, especially if you want access to a wider range of high-level labs and research centers across many fields. Berkeley’s scale, faculty depth, and proximity to major national labs create unusually strong opportunities in STEM, social sciences, and humanities. For building a research profile for grad school, it tends to offer more breadth and more name-recognition tied directly to research.

Berkeley’s biggest advantage is the sheer volume and variety of research happening on campus. Undergraduates can find opportunities through individual labs, department programs, faculty outreach, and structured options like URAP, which is specifically designed to connect undergrads with research projects. That matters if you want to start early, because there are simply more entry points and more kinds of projects available.

Another difference is the research ecosystem around the university. Berkeley’s connections with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and its concentration of major research institutes can translate into especially strong opportunities in physics, chemistry, engineering, computing, public policy, and related areas.

Stony Brook is still a very real research university, and it can be excellent for undergrads, particularly in the sciences. Its ties to Brookhaven National Laboratory are a major plus, and in some departments students may find it easier to stand out or build closer relationships with faculty earlier. That said, across the full university, Berkeley tends to provide the stronger overall research platform for undergraduates.

The main caveat is access versus competition. Berkeley has more opportunities, but also more students chasing them, so initiative matters. Even with that competition, the combination of structured programs, faculty output, and cross-disciplinary depth usually makes Berkeley the more powerful place for an undergrad who wants to build research experience for graduate school.
