How should I compare UC Berkeley and Duke for engineering?

I’m a high school senior choosing between UC Berkeley and Duke for an engineering degree. I’m interested in strong academics and meaningful opportunities to work on real engineering projects, but I’m having trouble deciding which school would be the better overall fit.

For a student whose top priority is engineering depth and access to a vast technical ecosystem, UC Berkeley is the more compelling choice. Berkeley’s College of Engineering has exceptional breadth across fields such as electrical engineering and computer sciences, mechanical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, bioengineering, and materials science. Its location near the Bay Area also puts internships, startups, labs, and engineering employers unusually close to campus.

Berkeley offers a larger, more specialized engineering environment. That can mean more course options, research groups, student project teams, and peers pursuing highly technical paths, but it also means large introductory classes and a more self-directed experience. Students who thrive there tend to be comfortable seeking out office hours, research openings, and project roles proactively.

Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering offers a distinctly smaller-scale undergraduate experience. Its engineering curriculum emphasizes design, teamwork, and interdisciplinary work, and undergraduates can often build closer relationships with faculty earlier. Duke may feel more personal in advising and classroom access, while still providing serious research opportunities in areas including biomedical engineering, robotics, energy, and computing.

Campus culture is another meaningful difference. Berkeley has an urban, public-university setting with a large and intensely academic student body; engineering life is closely connected to the Bay Area’s technology and entrepreneurship scene. Duke has a more residential campus atmosphere in Durham, North Carolina, with a strong sense of campus community and easier access to courses and activities outside engineering.

Cost should carry real weight. For a California resident, Berkeley can be substantially less expensive than a private university unless Duke’s financial-aid package closes the gap. Compare the actual four-year net cost, not just first-year scholarships, alongside the specific engineering major, research labs, project teams, and internship pathways that most excite you.
