Is American University worth it compared with Boston University?

Boston University is usually the stronger value if cost is anywhere close, because it carries broader national name recognition and tends to open more doors across a wider range of fields. BU is seen as the more prominent university overall, and its reputation travels more easily beyond its immediate region. That matters for internships, first-job signaling, and graduate school impressions, especially if you are not fully locked into one niche area.

One big differentiator is academic breadth. BU has a larger research profile and stronger visibility across business, STEM, health fields, communications, and the arts, so it gives you more room to change direction without sacrificing institutional strength. American is respected, but its clearest edge is in areas tied to politics, public affairs, international relations, and policy.

Location creates a different kind of opportunity gap. American benefits from being in Washington, DC, which is excellent for internships with government agencies, think tanks, nonprofits, advocacy groups, and embassies during the school year. BU’s Boston location is also a major advantage, but in a more diversified way, with access to hospitals, startups, finance, media, research labs, and a large concentration of employers across industries.

Reputation is where the difference is usually most noticeable. American has a solid standing and a recognizable identity, especially for students aiming at DC-centered careers, but BU is more likely to be viewed as the more prestigious and versatile option by employers and the public. If American is significantly cheaper or you are specifically focused on political science, international affairs, public policy, or journalism connected to DC, then it can absolutely be worth choosing.
