Is American University worth the cost compared with University of Miami for undergraduates?

University of Miami is usually the better value for most undergraduates unless American University is giving you a meaningfully better financial aid package or you are specifically committed to politics, policy, or DC-based work. Miami offers a broader range of strong undergraduate options, a more traditional campus experience, and access to major research, health, business, and STEM opportunities through a larger university ecosystem. American University’s biggest advantage is its location in Washington, DC, which can be especially useful for internships during the school year in government, advocacy, international affairs, and communications.

One major differentiator is academic breadth. American is well known for political science, international relations, public affairs, and communications, but it is narrower in where it clearly stands out.

Another difference is how internships and career access work. American students can often tap DC opportunities during the semester, which is a real asset if your goals line up with federal agencies, nonprofits, think tanks, lobbying, or diplomacy. Miami students still get internships and strong career outcomes, but the edge comes more from the university’s alumni network, professional schools, and resources tied to finance, healthcare, media, entrepreneurship, and Latin American business connections.

The cost question matters most when you connect it to likely outcomes. If American costs substantially more and you are not targeting a DC-centered career path from the start, the premium is hard to justify for undergrad. If prices are close and you want politics or international affairs with frequent semester-time internships, American can absolutely be worth it, but in a pure value comparison, Miami more often gives you more for the money.
