Is American University worth the cost compared with the University of Maryland for an undergrad degree?

For most students, no: American usually is not worth paying substantially more than the University of Maryland for an undergraduate degree. Maryland has a broader academic reputation, stronger STEM and business depth, and the resources of a large public flagship, while American’s main edge is its Washington, DC location and concentration in politics, international affairs, and policy. If the cost gap would require meaningful debt or financial strain, Maryland is usually the more sensible value.

One major differentiator is academic breadth and infrastructure. Maryland offers far more programs, larger research capacity, stronger lab and technical opportunities, and a wider range of majors if your interests change. That matters more than many students expect, because a lot of undergrads switch fields, add minors, or discover new interests once they arrive.

Another is career value by field. American does have a real advantage for students who want undergraduate access to internships tied to government, public affairs, NGOs, communications, and international relations in DC during the school year. But outside those lanes, Maryland’s outcomes and employer recognition are often just as strong or stronger, especially in engineering, computer science, business, and many sciences.

The cost side is hard to ignore because undergraduate prestige differences here usually do not justify a very large premium. American is a respected school, but it is not typically seen as so much more powerful in the job market that paying far more automatically makes sense. Families often find that the extra money is better saved for graduate school, internships, study abroad, or simply avoiding debt.
