Is UVA or William & Mary better for finance careers?

I’m a high school junior trying to decide between UVA and William & Mary, and finance is one of my main career interests. I know both schools are strong academically, but I’m trying to understand which one has a better reputation, recruiting network, or overall path for getting into finance after college.

I’m mostly interested in which school tends to give students a stronger advantage for finance-related jobs and internships.

The biggest practical difference is recruiting scale: UVA gives you a larger, more structured pipeline into finance, while William & Mary can still work well but usually requires more self-driven networking. UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce has a particularly strong reputation with employers, and the university’s alumni presence in major finance hubs is broader. William & Mary is respected and places students into finance too, but the path is typically less institutionalized and a bit narrower.

For internships and first jobs, UVA tends to have the clearer edge. More firms actively recruit there, especially for investment banking, asset management, consulting-adjacent finance roles, and corporate finance. The student ecosystem also matters: there are more finance-focused clubs, more peers targeting those jobs, and more built-in preparation for technical interviews, networking, and recruiting timelines.

William & Mary is not a weak option at all. It has a strong academic reputation, loyal alumni, and students who do well in finance, particularly when they are proactive early. But compared with UVA, it is usually less of a target for the highest-volume finance recruiting, so outcomes can depend more on individual hustle, relationship-building, and seeking opportunities off campus.

Reputation-wise, UVA carries more weight in finance circles, especially because of McIntire and the strength of its alumni network. That does not mean William & Mary closes doors, but UVA more often opens them sooner and with less friction.

If your main goal is maximizing access to finance internships and recruiting opportunities, UVA is the stronger choice. William & Mary can absolutely lead to finance, but UVA usually offers the more direct and better-supported route.
