Which is better for internships, Colby or NYU?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus structure: NYU puts you in New York City, where internships and networking are built into daily life, while Colby offers a smaller, more residential experience where internships usually take more planning, summer timing, and school-supported funding. If your priority is being able to intern during the semester, attend events with employers regularly, and build contacts in person, NYU has the clearer edge. Colby can still lead to strong internships, but it is less convenient and usually more dependent on your initiative and use of alumni or career resources.

At NYU, location matters a lot. Students can realistically intern part-time during the academic year in fields like media, finance, arts, nonprofits, tech, and public policy, and the university’s ties to New York employers make networking more immediate. That kind of access can matter because it lets you stack multiple experiences before graduation instead of relying mostly on summers.

At Colby, the school does a good job creating support in a place where local opportunities are more limited. Its career center, alumni network, and funding for internships or summer experiences can help students pursue opportunities in bigger cities. But Waterville is not New York, so many internships with the strongest brand recognition or easiest in-semester access will require travel, remote work, or waiting until summer.

One important nuance is field. For industries concentrated in major cities, especially finance, media, entertainment, fashion, and some startup or arts spaces, NYU is much easier for internships. For students headed toward research, public service, environmental work, or opportunities where summer placements matter more than term-time access, Colby can still work very well, but it is less naturally internship-rich day to day.

So on the narrow question of internship access and networking while you are in college, NYU is the stronger option. Colby is more competitive if you prefer a liberal arts environment and are comfortable being strategic about summers, but it does not match NYU’s built-in internship ecosystem.
