Which is better for finance: San Diego State or University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools are on it. I know they’re pretty different, but I want to study finance and I’m mostly comparing which one would be the stronger choice for getting into the field after graduation.

I’m looking for a general comparison of their finance programs, recruiting, and overall reputation for finance students.

For finance, UIUC is usually the stronger option if your priority is national reputation, a larger recruiting footprint, and access to more structured pipelines into major finance employers. Gies College of Business has a very visible presence in business recruiting, a large alumni network, and stronger name recognition in finance circles beyond its region. San Diego State can still work well, especially for students targeting Southern California, but it tends to be more regional in reach.

UIUC fits the student who wants a big, highly resourced business environment with lots of finance-focused peers, student organizations, and employer activity. If you are interested in investment banking, corporate finance at large firms, asset management, or broader national recruiting, UIUC gives you more built-in momentum. Its scale can be a real advantage because there are many finance clubs, career events, and alumni channels, though you also need to be comfortable being proactive in a large, competitive setting.

SDSU makes more sense for a student who wants strong access to the San Diego and broader Southern California market, especially if cost, location, and lifestyle matter a lot. It can be a good platform for corporate finance, commercial banking, financial advising, real estate-related paths, and regional business roles. The network is solid in California, and being in San Diego can help with local internships during the school year, which is a meaningful plus if you want hands-on experience early.

In terms of overall reputation specifically for finance, UIUC carries more weight nationally and is more likely to open doors across multiple regions. SDSU is respected, but more as a strong public university with regional business connections than as a national finance target. If your goal is to maximize recruiting breadth and brand strength in finance, UIUC has the clearer edge. If you want to build a career in Southern California and value location-based internship access, SDSU remains a credible option.
