Is San Diego State or UCLA better for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between SDSU and UCLA and I want to study something that could lead to a career in finance. I know both schools have different reputations, but I’m not sure how that translates into recruiting, internships, and job opportunities after graduation.
For someone aiming for finance, which school is generally the stronger choice?

UCLA is the stronger choice for finance careers. It carries much broader national recognition, has deeper on-campus recruiting for competitive finance roles, and places students into a wider range of firms in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. If your goal includes investment banking, asset management, corporate finance at major firms, or highly structured internship pipelines, UCLA gives you more built-in access.
One major differentiator is recruiting reach. UCLA is much more likely to attract large employers that hire for analyst programs and finance internships at scale, and its alumni network is especially useful in California finance circles. That matters because in finance, school brand and alumni access can open first-round interviews that are harder to get otherwise.
Another difference is the student ecosystem around finance. At UCLA, you are more likely to find a dense concentration of students targeting banking, consulting, and high-finance paths, along with clubs and peer networks that are already tuned to technical prep, networking, and internship timing. That kind of environment can make a real difference because finance recruiting often starts early and rewards students who know the process quickly.
SDSU can still lead to a successful finance career, especially for corporate finance, commercial banking, real estate, accounting-adjacent roles, and regional opportunities in Southern California. It has a solid business reputation and strong local connections, but it is not typically the same level of feeder for the most selective finance tracks. For a student deciding purely on finance outcomes and recruiting strength, UCLA has the clearer edge.
