Is San Diego State or Santa Clara better for finance?

I’m trying to decide between San Diego State and Santa Clara for undergrad and I want to study finance. I know both schools have different reputations and recruiting networks, but I’m not sure which one is generally stronger for getting a finance job after graduation.

I’m mainly looking at the overall finance program and how well each school is viewed by employers for entry-level finance roles.

For finance, Santa Clara usually has the clearer edge if you want stronger access to employers, a more business-focused private-school network, and proximity to Bay Area firms. Its Leavey School of Business is well known in Northern California, and that location helps with internships in corporate finance, financial planning, fintech, accounting, and some investment-related roles.

Santa Clara fits the student who wants a tighter business network and is likely to use alumni connections aggressively. It is especially appealing if you are interested in finance roles tied to tech companies, venture-backed firms, or corporate finance teams rather than only traditional Wall Street-style paths. The school’s setting makes in-semester internships and networking events more realistic, which matters a lot in finance recruiting.

San Diego State makes more sense for a student who wants a larger public university experience, lower cost if that applies, and solid outcomes built more through hustle than brand advantage. SDSU can absolutely place students into finance jobs, especially in Southern California, but the path is often less pre-structured and more dependent on how early you pursue internships, student organizations, and networking. For entry-level roles in banking, wealth management, commercial banking, real estate finance, and corporate finance, SDSU is respected, but it does not usually carry the same immediate employer signal as Santa Clara in business circles.

If your question is strictly which school is stronger for launching a finance career, Santa Clara is the safer answer. SDSU is still a good option for someone confident about creating opportunities and wanting the broader big-campus environment, but Santa Clara tends to offer the more finance-friendly platform from day one.
