Is UC Davis or Boston University better for finance careers?
I’m trying to compare these two schools because I want to go into finance after college. I know both have different reputations and are in very different locations, so I’m having trouble figuring out which one gives better career opportunities.
I’m mostly interested in how each school is viewed by employers and which one tends to lead to stronger finance recruiting.

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and recruiting access: Boston University puts you in a major East Coast financial hub during the school year, while UC Davis offers a strong UC brand but is not a core finance recruiting campus in the same way. For finance specifically, proximity matters because internships, alumni networking, and in-semester recruiting are easier when you are already near firms. BU also tends to have more direct visibility with employers in Boston, New York, and other East Coast finance circles.
In employer perception, BU is usually the more finance-oriented option of these two. UC Davis is well respected academically, especially within California, but it is more commonly associated with broader strengths than with being a finance target.
That does not mean Davis closes doors. You can absolutely reach finance from UC Davis, especially for corporate finance, commercial banking, accounting-related paths, and some West Coast roles. But for highly structured recruiting into investment banking, buy-side roles, or other competitive front-office tracks, BU tends to offer the clearer path because of geography and employer familiarity with students pursuing finance early.
Another practical point is internship timing. At BU, being in Boston makes part-time internships during the academic year much more realistic, and weekend trips to New York are possible for networking and interviews. At Davis, students often need to be more proactive about traveling, building connections independently, and using summers strategically.
If your main goal is the strongest recruiting setup for finance, especially traditional high-finance paths, Boston University has the edge. UC Davis can still work well, particularly if cost is much lower or if you see yourself leaning toward California-based business roles, but on finance career opportunity alone, BU is the better bet.
