UC Davis vs Notre Dame for finance careers
I’m trying to decide between UC Davis and Notre Dame, and I’m mainly interested in finance after college. I know both schools are strong in different ways, but I’m not sure how they compare for recruiting, internships, and getting into finance jobs later on.
I’m trying to understand which school tends to give students a better path into finance careers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is reach versus cost and scale: Notre Dame gives you a much clearer on-campus path into finance recruiting, while UC Davis can still get you there but usually with more self-directed networking and hustle. Notre Dame has a very established alumni network, strong Wall Street recognition, and a business school structure that makes finance recruiting more visible. UC Davis is a large public university with solid academics and access to California markets, but it is not as much of a traditional target for high-finance hiring.
For finance specifically, Notre Dame tends to offer the stronger pipeline. Employers in investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, and consulting are very familiar with Mendoza and with Notre Dame students more broadly. The alumni base is especially helpful in finance, and that matters a lot because internships and first jobs in the field often come through warm connections, student investing clubs, and alumni referrals rather than just applying online.
UC Davis can still work well for finance, especially for corporate finance, accounting-related paths, commercial banking, real estate, and some West Coast opportunities. But compared with Notre Dame, students often need to be more proactive about building that path themselves through networking, internships during the school year or summer, and possibly targeting San Francisco or Sacramento opportunities early. It is less of a built-in recruiting machine for Wall Street-type roles.
If your main goal is the strongest and most direct launch into finance recruiting, Notre Dame is the better bet. UC Davis becomes more compelling if the cost difference is major or if you prefer staying in California and are comfortable creating your own recruiting momentum.
