The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer density: the University of Washington sits in Seattle, where students have direct access to a large concentration of tech, healthcare, research, and corporate employers, while Florida State is in Tallahassee, where the strongest opportunities tend to be government, policy, nonprofit, and some regional business roles. That matters because ease of finding internships often depends less on the school name alone and more on how many relevant employers are nearby during the semester. For most students who want a broad, high-volume internship market while in school, UW has the clearer edge.

UW benefits from being tied into the Seattle-area economy, which makes part-time internships during the academic year more realistic and gives students access to alumni and recruiters from major companies, hospitals, startups, and research labs. It is especially well positioned for students interested in computer science, engineering, business, public health, biotech, and research-heavy fields. The university’s scale and employer presence around campus usually create more ways to build experience before summer.

Florida State does have real advantages, just in a narrower set of areas. Tallahassee is the state capital, so FSU students can access internships in state government, legislative offices, lobbying, public policy, law-related settings, and public sector organizations in a way many campuses cannot match. If your interests lean toward politics, public administration, international affairs, or state-level policy work, FSU can be very strategically placed.

For overall internship access across many industries, I’d lean toward the University of Washington. If your goal is to maximize the number and variety of opportunities during the school year, especially in a major metro area, UW is likely to make that easier. Florida State becomes more compelling when your interests line up with government and policy, where its location creates a more specialized advantage.
