Are Lehigh or BU worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

Neither Lehigh nor Boston University is automatically worth paying a very large premium for over a substantially cheaper option, especially if that price gap would mean heavy student or parent debt. Both are respected schools with strong outcomes, but neither has the kind of across-the-board payoff that reliably justifies stretching far beyond your family’s comfort. In most cases, the long-term value depends less on the school name alone and more on your major, borrowing amount, and what the lower-cost alternative actually is.

Boston University’s biggest value case is access. Its location in Boston creates proximity to internships, hospitals, research labs, finance, media, nonprofits, and large employers during the school year, which can matter a lot in fields where experience while enrolled leads directly to jobs.

Lehigh’s strongest argument is a more contained undergraduate experience with a reputation for solid outcomes in engineering, business, and certain STEM areas. It tends to offer a more traditional campus environment and often more direct undergraduate attention than a very large city university, which can matter if you learn best in a tighter community and want easier access to professors, alumni, and leadership opportunities. That kind of environment can create real value, but it still does not erase a major price difference.

The biggest practical differentiator is debt. If choosing BU or Lehigh would require loans that push you into years of financial strain, the cheaper option is usually the smarter decision because undergraduate prestige has limits, especially outside a small set of highly name-driven paths. A school becomes "worth it" when the extra cost buys something you will actually use, such as a specific program, location advantage, recruiting pipeline, or academic environment that clearly fits how you work best.
