Is Lehigh or WashU worth the cost for an undergrad degree?

WashU is worth the extra cost only if the gap is manageable for your family without heavy borrowing, because it tends to offer broader academic flexibility, stronger national name recognition, and more undergraduate access to research and pre-professional opportunities. Lehigh is still an excellent undergraduate school, especially for engineering, business, and students who want a smaller, more intimate campus culture. If the price difference would force significant debt, Lehigh is very often the smarter value.

One real differentiator is academic reach. WashU has more depth across disciplines, which matters if you are undecided or expect your interests to shift between fields like biology, economics, public health, design, or pre-med. Its undergraduate environment is built around a major research university, so students often have access to labs, faculty projects, and cross-school coursework that can be harder to match at a smaller institution.

Another difference is reputation and portability. WashU carries stronger national recognition, particularly in medicine-adjacent fields, research, and highly selective graduate or professional school pipelines. That does not mean Lehigh limits you, but WashU’s name tends to travel more easily across regions and industries, which can matter if you want maximum flexibility after college.

Lehigh’s edge is that it often delivers a more personal undergraduate experience for less money. It has a close-knit campus, loyal alumni network, and strong outcomes in fields like finance, consulting, engineering, and industry roles, especially in the Northeast. At the undergraduate level, that combination can be a very good return on investment, particularly if you are self-directed and do not need the extra breadth WashU offers.
