Its Core Curriculum adds a fixed set of demanding classes on top of your major, the semester rhythm can feel fast and compressed, and the culture in New York often amplifies ambition and comparison. McGill is certainly rigorous, especially in programs like engineering, science, and management, but many students describe the pressure as more self-directed and less shaped by an intensely competitive campus atmosphere.

Columbia tends to fit students who are energized by constant stimulation, heavy reading loads, and a high-achieving peer culture where people are often juggling internships, research, campus leadership, and the city itself. A lot of the stress there is not just academic difficulty, but the feeling that everyone around you is doing a lot at once. Even students who like that environment often mention that it can be hard to fully step away from work.

McGill tends to suit students who want serious academics without the same level of social intensity around prestige and performance. Classes can be large, and that can create its own stress because you may need to be more independent about seeking help, staying organized, and building community. But the overall vibe is often seen as a bit less curated and less pressurized than Columbia’s, with more room to define your own pace.

Location matters too. Columbia’s setting in New York can be exciting, but it also contributes to a faster, more expensive, more career-conscious daily life. McGill’s Montreal setting is still urban and lively, yet many students find it easier to maintain balance there, both financially and socially.

So if your main concern is ambient stress and pressure, Columbia is more likely to feel intense even outside the classroom. McGill can still be demanding, but it more often feels like a place where the stress comes from the coursework itself rather than from the entire surrounding culture.
