Is McGill or Boston University better for city life as a college student?

For day-to-day city life, McGill usually feels more immersed in its urban setting. Its downtown Montreal location puts students right next to major streets, cafes, parks, festivals, and public transit in a way that often makes the city feel like part of campus from the moment you walk out the door.

McGill’s campus is compact but sits directly against downtown, so students often move back and forth between university spaces and city spaces without much separation. That creates a strong sense that student life and city life blend together, especially because Montreal’s neighborhoods are easy to explore on foot or by metro and have a distinct student-friendly culture.

Boston University is definitely urban too, but it feels different. BU stretches along Commonwealth Avenue in a long corridor, and while that gives you access to Boston, the university itself can feel like its own lane running through the city rather than a campus fully absorbed into it. Students are in Boston every day, but the experience is a bit more linear and campus-defined.

Montreal also tends to shape undergraduate life in a more visible cultural way. McGill students are surrounded by street festivals, dense neighborhood life, bilingual culture, and a lower-cost social scene than Boston, which often makes spontaneous off-campus life easier. At BU, Boston offers major internships, museums, sports, and strong professional energy, but the city can feel more expensive and more work-oriented than socially woven into everyday undergraduate routines.
