Is Lehigh or Rutgers worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

I’m trying to decide between Lehigh and Rutgers and the price difference is pretty big for my family. I know both are solid schools, but I’m having trouble figuring out whether the extra cost for Lehigh is actually worth it in the long run.

I’m mostly thinking about value for the degree, career opportunities, and whether the more expensive school really gives a meaningful advantage.

Rutgers is usually the better value for an undergraduate degree unless Lehigh is close in price for your family or you have a very specific reason to want Lehigh’s smaller-campus experience. Rutgers is a major public research university with a large alumni network, strong recruiting in the Northeast, and broad opportunities across business, engineering, sciences, and pre-professional paths. For most students, those advantages are enough that paying a much higher price for Lehigh is hard to justify purely on return on investment.

One big differentiator is scale and access. Rutgers offers far more majors, more research labs, more student organizations, and a larger employer pipeline simply because it is so large and spread across multiple campuses. That matters if you are still exploring interests, might switch fields, or want access to internships during the school year, especially given its location and connections to New York and New Jersey employers.

Lehigh’s clearest edge is the undergraduate experience, not automatic career payoff. It has a smaller student body, more intimate classes, and often easier access to professors, advising, and tight-knit campus communities. That can be a real plus for students who know they thrive in a more personal environment, but it does not automatically translate into enough extra earnings or opportunity to make a much larger bill worthwhile.

Cost should drive this decision more than prestige. If Rutgers would let you graduate with substantially less debt, that flexibility matters a lot after college, especially if you may pursue grad school, lower-paying internships, or careers where your first salary is not huge. Lehigh can be worth it when the net price gap is modest and the smaller private-school environment is something you know you will fully use, but if the difference is big, Rutgers is the smarter financial call.
