Fordham vs UNC for communications: which is better for a communications major?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and I’m interested in communications. Fordham and UNC both seem like strong options, but I’m having trouble telling which one is the better fit for that major.

I care most about the overall strength of the communications program and the kinds of opportunities students usually get there.

For communications, UNC is usually the stronger academic and pre-professional option if you want a nationally known program with a lot of structure, media specialization, and established industry pathways. UNC’s Hussman School is one of the school’s standout programs, and students benefit from a large alumni network, strong student media, and access to internships in journalism, advertising, public relations, and digital media. Fordham can still be a very appealing choice, especially for a student who wants New York City access and a somewhat smaller private-school environment, but its communications profile is not as central to the university’s identity as UNC’s is.

UNC makes the most sense for a student who wants communications to feel like a major institutional strength rather than just one good department. The Hussman School has a clear professional orientation, and that matters because communications students often benefit from hands-on training, campus publications, media organizations, and faculty who are closely tied to the field. Chapel Hill is not New York, but UNC’s reputation helps students connect to opportunities well beyond campus, and the program has long had strong visibility in media-related careers.

Fordham tends to fit the student who wants to build a communications path through location and initiative. Being in New York is a real advantage for internships during the semester, networking, and exposure to media, advertising, and corporate communications employers. If you are the kind of student who wants to be off campus often, take advantage of the city, and shape your own set of experiences, Fordham can be very attractive.

One practical distinction is that at UNC, the communications-related ecosystem is more likely to feel deep and campus-centered, while at Fordham, the city itself becomes a major part of the experience. If your top priority is the strength and recognition of the communications program itself, UNC has the edge. If your top priority is studying communications while living and interning in New York from early on, Fordham has a compelling case.
