The biggest difference is that BU has more built-in journalism infrastructure, while Fordham often appeals to students who want to shape a journalism path within a wider university experience.

BU tends to fit the student who already knows they want journalism training in a focused, professional setting. Its journalism offerings sit inside a school built around communication fields, so classes, faculty, peers, and campus opportunities are more concentrated in that area. That usually means an easier time finding hands-on reporting experience, student publications, broadcast or multimedia work, and classmates who are aiming for similar media careers.

Fordham makes more sense for a student who likes journalism but also wants a stronger traditional liberal arts feel, smaller-scale campus communities, and the particular advantage of being in New York City. Its location can be a real asset for internships, reporting, and networking, especially if you are proactive. But Fordham is less known first and foremost as a journalism destination, so some of the momentum may need to come more from you.

If your priority is the strongest journalism-specific program structure, BU is the school I would lean toward. If you are drawn to New York, want flexibility, and like the idea of building journalism experience through the city and Fordham’s broader academic setting, Fordham can be a smart choice.
