Fordham vs Santa Clara for finance: which is the better school for a career in finance?

I’m trying to decide between Fordham and Santa Clara and I want to study finance. I’m mainly looking at which school would be stronger for getting internships, networking, and landing a good first job after graduation.

I know both are respected, but I’m having a hard time figuring out which one has the better reputation for finance specifically.

For finance, Fordham usually has the clearer edge if your goal is traditional finance recruiting, especially in New York. Its Gabelli School of Business is closely tied to the NYC market, which means more direct access to internships during the school year, a large alumni base in finance, and stronger visibility with firms that recruit in the city. If you picture yourself aiming for investment banking, corporate finance, asset management, or similar paths right after college, Fordham’s location matters in a very practical way.

Santa Clara makes more sense for a student who wants finance with a Silicon Valley flavor rather than a Wall Street one. Its strengths show up more in areas connected to tech, entrepreneurship, fintech-adjacent work, and corporate roles at West Coast companies. If you are interested in financial planning, corporate finance within tech firms, venture-related spaces, or building a career in California, Santa Clara can be very attractive because of its regional network and employer connections.

Santa Clara is also appealing for someone who wants a more traditional residential campus environment and a strong West Coast professional base. It is well regarded, especially in its region, but for finance specifically, its reputation is not as directly tied to the classic finance recruiting ecosystem as Fordham’s is.

So if the question is strictly which school is stronger for launching a finance career, Fordham has the sharper advantage. Santa Clara is a very solid option, but it is usually the more compelling choice when your interests overlap with tech, Silicon Valley employers, or long-term West Coast placement.
