Is American University or NYU worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

If you are paying close to full price, NYU is more likely than American University to justify a very high undergraduate cost, but even then it depends heavily on major and debt level. NYU has a broader national and international brand, deeper recruiting pipelines in fields like finance, consulting, tech, media, and the arts, and a very large alumni network in New York. American University has real strengths, especially for politics, international affairs, public policy, and some communications paths, but its career payoff is usually more uneven relative to the price.

For the student aiming at high-earning private-sector fields, NYU has the clearer ROI case. Its location is not just a nice backdrop, since many students use it for internships during the academic year. That matters most if you are studying something with strong employer demand and structured recruiting, because the salary upside can be large enough to offset a higher sticker price more realistically.

For the student focused on government, nonprofit, advocacy, international affairs, or policy-adjacent work, American can be excellent academically and professionally connected, especially because of Washington access. The issue is that many of those careers do not pay enough early on to make very high undergraduate debt comfortable. In other words, American can be a strong launchpad, but not always a strong financial bargain at a steep net price.

If your likely path is journalism, communications, public affairs, political science, or international relations, I would be cautious about paying a premium for either school unless the aid is decent. If your path is business, economics, computer science, or another field with stronger salary outcomes, NYU has a much more convincing value argument. I would be hesitant to treat American as worth a major extra cost over cheaper alternatives unless you have a very specific DC-centered goal and the price gap is manageable.

A practical way to frame it is debt tolerance. NYU can make sense when it opens doors to high-compensation sectors and you are confident you will pursue them. American is easier to justify when the net price is brought down meaningfully, because its strongest pathways are often mission-driven rather than high-paying right away.
