Is Purdue or UC Davis better for biology?

One big differentiator is the surrounding academic ecosystem. UC Davis is deeply built around biological research, with major connections across veterinary medicine, agriculture, environmental science, public health, genomics, and biomedical labs. For an undergraduate biology major, that often means more breadth in biological subfields and more nearby faculty work that feels directly connected to the major.

Another difference is reputation within biology-specific circles. Purdue is very well respected overall, especially in engineering, technology, and some science areas, but biology is not usually the first thing people associate with Purdue. UC Davis, by contrast, is widely recognized for biological and agricultural sciences in a way that gives the biology major more distinct visibility.

Undergraduate opportunities also tilt in Davis’s favor for many students interested in hands-on biology. The campus culture and research infrastructure make it easier to find work tied to field biology, lab biology, organismal science, environmental biology, and health-adjacent research. Purdue can still be a very good choice, especially if you like its broader STEM environment, but for strongest overall biology reputation and depth at the undergraduate level, UC Davis is the clearer pick.
