Purdue vs. UIUC for tech jobs: which school is better for recruiting and internships?

UIUC has the edge for tech recruiting and internships, especially if your goal is software engineering or top-tier big tech recruiting. Its computer science program has an especially strong national reputation, and that tends to translate into heavier employer interest, a broader alumni footprint in software, and very strong on-campus recruiting for technical roles.

One concrete difference is employer concentration around CS itself. At UIUC, recruiters are often targeting the CS talent pipeline very directly, and the school has long-standing visibility with major tech companies for software engineering, systems, AI, and quant-adjacent technical roles.

Another differentiator is location and network flow. UIUC benefits from deep ties into the Chicago market while also sending many graduates to the Bay Area, Seattle, New York, and other major tech hubs. Purdue also places well nationally, especially in engineering, but its recruiting identity is a bit more balanced across software, hardware, aerospace, manufacturing, and traditional engineering sectors rather than being quite as concentrated around CS-driven hiring.

The third difference is how each school feels beyond pure CS. Purdue is exceptionally strong for engineering overall, and for some students in computer engineering, ECE, industrial engineering, or interdisciplinary technical paths, it can be just as effective for internships and job outcomes.

For a student mainly optimizing for software internships and tech recruiting density, UIUC is the one I’d lean toward. For a student who wants a powerhouse engineering environment with excellent outcomes across multiple technical fields, Purdue holds its own extremely well.
