Penn State’s Smeal College of Business is widely respected by employers, especially in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and its alumni network is enormous. Delaware’s Lerner College of Business is also well regarded, and one practical advantage is that Newark sits close to major internship and job markets like Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, New York, and Washington.

Penn State fits the student who wants a very large, high-energy campus with a business school that feels big, visible, and connected to a huge alumni base. That matters in fields like finance, consulting, supply chain, accounting, and marketing, where networking and brand familiarity can help. Smeal is especially known for strong employer recruiting and for giving students access to a broad range of clubs, career fairs, and business-specific resources, but you have to be comfortable at a massive university where initiative matters.

Delaware makes more sense for the student who wants strong business training in a somewhat more manageable setting. Lerner students often find it easier to feel known by faculty and advisors, and the location is genuinely useful for internships during the school year, not just in the summer. Delaware can be especially appealing if you want a classic college campus without the scale and intensity of Penn State, while still having solid access to recruiting and respected academics.

If your main priority is employer visibility and the reach of the alumni network, Penn State has the edge. If you care more about a slightly smaller environment, easier proximity to multiple business hubs, and a business program that may feel less overwhelming day to day, Delaware is very compelling.
