Which is better for pre-vet: San Diego State or UC Davis?

UC Davis is the stronger pick for pre-vet. It has one of the most established animal science and veterinary ecosystems in the country, with a top veterinary school on campus, extensive animal facilities, and many more built-in ways to get animal experience, research exposure, and advising tied directly to veterinary careers.

The biggest difference is access to relevant opportunities. At UC Davis, pre-vet students can study Animal Science, Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology, or related life sciences while being surrounded by teaching barns, equine and dairy units, veterinary hospital settings, and faculty doing animal-focused research. That matters because vet school applicants need hands-on animal work, strong science preparation, and recommenders who understand the field.

Advising and peer culture also lean much more heavily pre-vet at Davis. Because so many students there are pursuing animal and agricultural fields, the pathway is more visible: courses are planned with pre-vet students in mind, student organizations are active in the space, and it is easier to find classmates, mentors, and alumni who know the vet school application process well.

San Diego State can still work, especially if you prefer a more urban campus and would be happy majoring in biology or a related science rather than in a dedicated animal-focused field. But for veterinary preparation specifically, SDSU does not offer the same depth of animal science infrastructure or the same concentration of nearby, campus-connected vet opportunities that Davis does.

Cost, location, and campus feel still matter, but on the specific question of pre-vet preparation, UC Davis gives you a more direct runway.
