Is San Diego State or UC Davis better for choosing a major if I’m still undecided?

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure versus breadth: UC Davis usually gives you a wider academic menu and more room to explore across colleges and disciplines, while San Diego State can feel more straightforward and career-focused but sometimes less expansive if you are truly undecided. For a student who wants time to test different fields, UC Davis tends to offer more options in the sciences, agriculture and environmental fields, social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary study. SDSU still offers solid variety, especially in business, public health, communications, psychology, and applied fields, but Davis is usually the stronger place for broad academic exploration.

UC Davis is especially helpful if your uncertainty is real uncertainty, meaning you could see yourself anywhere from biology to economics to environmental policy to psychology. It has the scale of a large research university, which usually means more departments, more niche majors, and more chances to pivot once you discover what you like. That matters because undecided students often do not just change majors, they change whole categories of interest.

SDSU can be a very good option if your exploration is narrower and you already suspect you want something practical or professionally oriented. Its programs often feel more connected to clear career pathways, and some students like that because it helps them make a decision faster. But if you are hoping to wander academically for a bit before locking in a direction, Davis is often more accommodating.

One thing to check closely at either school is how easy it is to switch into impacted or capacity-limited majors. That issue can matter more than the label “undeclared.” If you are choosing mainly on flexibility while undecided, UC Davis gets the edge.
