Which is better for public policy: Villanova or George Washington?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus campus experience. George Washington gives you direct access to Washington, DC, where policy is happening every day, so internships during the semester, agency exposure, think tanks, nonprofits, and networking are built into student life. Villanova offers a more traditional residential campus and a strong undergraduate environment, but it does not match GW’s day-to-day proximity to federal policy work.

For public policy specifically, GW is usually viewed as the more established and better-connected option. Its programs benefit from being in DC, and that matters a lot in this field because policy hiring and early experience often depend on internships, research roles, and professional relationships. If you want to test different areas like education policy, health policy, international affairs, urban policy, or government relations while still in college, GW makes that much easier.

Villanova is still a respected university, and you can absolutely build a path into policy from there. It may appeal more if you want a classic campus feel, somewhat more separation from city life, and a strong overall undergraduate setting. For some students, that environment supports better balance and community than GW’s more urban, professionally oriented atmosphere.

But on the question of which school is stronger for public policy in overall reputation and opportunities, George Washington has the clearer edge. In this field, being surrounded by internships, alumni in government and advocacy, and regular access to policy institutions is a major advantage, and GW is built around that in a way Villanova is not.
