Which is generally harder to get into for admissions: Penn State or Rutgers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that these two schools are selective in slightly different ways: Penn State, especially University Park, tends to feel tougher because that main campus draws a very large national applicant pool, while Rutgers admissions can vary a lot by campus and by school within Rutgers. Broadly speaking, Penn State University Park is often perceived as a bit harder to get into than Rutgers New Brunswick overall, but the gap is not huge. At both schools, major choice and campus choice can change the picture quite a bit.

For a broad comparison, Penn State’s flagship campus usually comes across as the more admissions-competitive option. That is especially true for applicants aiming straight for University Park rather than another Penn State campus.

Rutgers is a little more complicated because selectivity can differ notably among Rutgers New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden, and also across colleges or programs within New Brunswick. Some Rutgers programs, especially business, engineering, and other high-demand tracks, can be quite competitive. So a student might find Rutgers easier in the broadest sense, but not necessarily easier for every program.

If you want the simplest answer to your question, Penn State University Park is generally the tougher admit than Rutgers as a whole, while Rutgers New Brunswick is in a fairly similar range and can be just as challenging for certain majors. For college-list planning, I would treat both as realistic but not automatic unless your academic profile is clearly above each school’s typical admitted range.
