How concerned should I be about crime at UC Berkeley?
I've been thinking a lot about the safety of college campuses, and UC Berkeley is one of my top choices. My parents keep bringing up crime statistics they've seen online, and I'm starting to get a little anxious.
If anyone here is a current student or knows the area well, can you give me a realistic idea of what crime is actually like on and around campus? Is it something that affects daily student life, or do most people feel safe? I want to make sure I have the full picture before making my college decision.
Would really appreciate firsthand experiences or advice on what to expect!

UC Berkeley, like many urban campuses, does have some issues with crime, particularly property crime such as bike theft, petty theft, and car break-ins. The campus itself puts a lot of effort into safety with things like emergency call boxes, well-lit paths, campus shuttles, and a dedicated campus police force.
In the areas immediately surrounding the university, crime rates can be a bit higher, especially south of campus where many students live. Most incidents are non-violent and involve unattended valuables or unlocked doors. Violent crime does occur, but it is quite rare and usually not targeted toward students specifically. Many students take simple precautions, like not walking alone late at night, using university rideshare or walking escort services, and keeping track of their belongings.
For a personal example, a student living off-campus might’ve had their bike stolen because it was parked outside overnight with a flimsy lock. On the other hand, most students who follow basic city-smart habits never experience more than the occasional warning email from the campus safety updates.
Most students do feel safe on campus day-to-day. Where you live and how you get around at night can make a difference—choosing well-populated, well-lit routes is a good idea. The university also offers BearWalk (a student-led night escort program), which is very popular, and late-night shuttles.
In short, while it’s smart to be aware and vigilant, crime at UC Berkeley isn’t wildly different from what you might encounter at other urban colleges. Learning a few safety best practices will allow you to enjoy campus life comfortably. If safety is a big concern, you may want to reach out to current students or check the official campus safety reports for more details. Many students still consider campus and the surrounding area a vibrant and rewarding place to study.
