Which is better for internships: University of Richmond or Fordham?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus campus support: Fordham gives you direct access to New York City’s huge internship market during the school year, while the University of Richmond offers a more contained campus experience with strong advising and a well-connected alumni network, but in a smaller city. If you want to intern frequently during fall or spring semesters, Fordham usually has the edge because students can reach finance, media, nonprofit, legal, and corporate opportunities in the city more easily. Richmond can still produce strong internship outcomes, especially through career services, faculty connections, and alumni, but many students rely more on summer internships or more structured searching.

Fordham’s advantage is especially noticeable for industries where proximity matters a lot. Being in the Bronx with access to Manhattan means students can realistically hold part-time internships during the semester, attend networking events, and build contacts earlier. That matters for fields like business, communications, political work, publishing, and entertainment, where repeated in-person exposure can turn into later opportunities.

Richmond does a lot well on the support side. It has a reputation for strong undergraduate attention, accessible professors, and organized career development resources. For some students, that leads to a smoother process because it can be easier to stand out, get recommendations, and tap into alumni who are invested in undergrads. But Richmond does not offer the same day-to-day internship density that Fordham does simply because Richmond, Virginia is a smaller market.

If internships are your top deciding factor, Fordham is the more practical choice in most cases. Richmond is very appealing if you want a more traditional residential campus and close support, but for sheer volume, variety, and during-the-semester access to internships and career connections, Fordham comes out ahead.
