Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Boston University better for scholarship value?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC often starts from a lower total cost, especially for Illinois residents, while Boston University can sometimes offer larger-looking merit awards but from a much higher sticker price. In other words, the better scholarship value is not just about who gives a bigger award, but which school leaves you with the lower net price after aid. For many students, especially in-state applicants to UIUC, UIUC ends up being the better value even if BU’s scholarship amount sounds more impressive on paper.

Boston University does offer notable merit scholarships, including some highly competitive awards. But BU is a private university with a high published cost of attendance, so even a substantial merit scholarship may still leave a family paying quite a lot. Merit at BU can be meaningful, but it is not automatic for most applicants and the biggest awards are limited and competitive.

UIUC, by contrast, is a public flagship, so its value picture depends heavily on residency. For Illinois residents, the tuition base is usually much more favorable, and that can make even modest scholarships go further. For out-of-state students, UIUC can still be a strong academic value, but the scholarship advantage is often less dramatic and merit aid may not reduce the cost enough to clearly beat BU unless the offer is especially strong.

If the question is purely which school tends to offer better scholarship value, UIUC usually has the edge for in-state students because lower starting cost makes every dollar of aid more effective. For out-of-state students, BU can be competitive if it gives a strong merit package or need-based aid, but UIUC is not consistently the more generous school for nonresidents. The real comparison should come down to each school’s net price calculator and your actual aid offer.
