Which offers better undergraduate return on investment: UIUC or Boston University?

For most undergraduates, UIUC offers the better return on investment, especially for Illinois residents and for students in engineering, computer science, data-related fields, accounting, or other technical majors. Its public-university pricing can create a substantially lower total cost than Boston University, while its flagship programs have deep employer recognition and strong recruiting pipelines. A lower debt burden makes the value advantage meaningful even when graduates enter similarly competitive job markets.

UIUC’s scale is a concrete career asset: major employers recruit heavily through its engineering, business, and technology-oriented programs, and the university has a large alumni presence across the Midwest as well as in national tech and consulting hubs. Out-of-state UIUC students should compare their specific aid packages more closely, since the price gap can narrow.

Boston University can justify its cost in particular circumstances. Its Boston location gives students unusually direct access to internships during the academic year in fields such as finance, communications, health care, biotech, public policy, and the arts. BU also has a strong national and international network, which can be valuable for a student intent on building a career in the Northeast and who will actively use the city’s opportunities.

Unless BU provides enough need-based or merit aid to bring its net price close to UIUC’s, UIUC is the more financially efficient choice.
