University of Richmond vs NYU for finance: which is better for recruiting and career opportunities?
I’m trying to decide between the University of Richmond and NYU for finance. I know both can be good options, but I’m mostly trying to understand which school gives a stronger path into finance jobs after graduation.
I’m interested in the overall recruiting strength, alumni network, and how well each school places students into finance careers.

NYU has the stronger path for finance recruiting and career opportunities. Its location in New York City puts you close to investment banks, buy-side firms, and corporate finance offices year-round, and NYU is a very established feeder into finance hiring. For pure access, volume of employers, and alumni reach in the industry, NYU has a clear edge.
The biggest differentiator is recruiting infrastructure and proximity. At NYU, students can realistically network during the semester, attend employer events with major finance firms, and pursue part-time or in-semester internships that are much harder to access from Richmond. That kind of repeated exposure matters a lot in finance, where early networking and sophomore or junior-year internships often drive full-time offers.
The alumni network also tilts toward NYU for finance specifically. NYU has a massive presence in New York financial services, and that creates more touchpoints across banking, asset management, sales and trading, private wealth, fintech, and corporate finance.
Richmond is still a credible option and can work very well for a strong student, especially because of its smaller size and more personal feel. You may get closer faculty relationships, individualized advising, and less internal competition for certain opportunities. Richmond can place students into finance, especially with hustle and targeted networking, but the pipeline is narrower and the employer volume is not on the same level.
For recruiting strength, alumni access, and breadth of finance outcomes, NYU is the more powerful choice.
