University of Richmond vs Notre Dame for finance: which is better for career outcomes and recruiting?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep coming back to University of Richmond and Notre Dame for finance. Both seem strong, but I’m mostly focused on which one gives better career outcomes for banking, corporate finance, or consulting.

I know fit matters too, but I’m mainly trying to understand which school has the stronger finance reputation and recruiting pipeline overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and reach versus intimacy and access. Notre Dame has the broader national brand, a much larger alumni network, and deeper recruiting across investment banking, consulting, and major corporate employers. Richmond, on the other hand, offers a smaller setting where motivated students can get close faculty support and stand out more easily, especially for East Coast finance paths.

For pure career outcomes and recruiting power in finance, Notre Dame has the stronger overall pipeline. Its Mendoza College of Business is very well known. The alumni network is one of its biggest advantages because it is unusually loyal and active, which matters a lot in finance recruiting where referrals, informational calls, and school-specific pipelines can make a real difference.

Richmond is still a very credible option, especially for students who want a smaller undergraduate business environment and may target firms in the Mid-Atlantic, Charlotte, Richmond, D.C., or New York. Robins School of Business is respected. But the recruiting footprint is narrower, and you are more likely to need to be highly proactive rather than benefit from the same level of built-in national pull.

For banking specifically, Notre Dame is the safer bet if your goal is maximizing access to top firms and broader geographic mobility. For corporate finance, both can work, but Notre Dame still tends to open more doors nationally.

Between the two, Notre Dame is the better choice for finance career outcomes and recruiting overall. Richmond can absolutely deliver strong results, especially for a student who wants a smaller campus and is comfortable driving the process hard.
