Is George Washington University worth the higher cost compared with Tulane University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is paying more for GWU’s Washington, DC location and direct access to internships versus paying less for Tulane’s stronger financial fit and a more traditional residential college experience. GWU’s biggest advantage is being embedded in DC, where students can pursue internships during the semester in government, policy, nonprofits, media, and international affairs. Tulane, meanwhile, is widely known for a lively campus culture, strong student engagement, and an undergraduate experience that often feels more cohesive than GWU’s more urban, decentralized setup.

From a value perspective, the extra cost for GWU is usually only worth it when you know you want to take real advantage of being in DC during the school year. That matters most for fields where location is part of the education, especially political science, international affairs, public policy, journalism, and some pre-law paths. If your interests are broader or you are not specifically trying to build a DC-based network early, Tulane often comes out ahead on value simply because the price difference can outweigh the practical benefit.

For overall college experience, many students would give Tulane the edge. It tends to offer a more distinct campus identity, stronger school spirit, and a social environment that feels less shaped by the city around it. GWU offers a very different kind of experience: independent, urban, professionally oriented, and less centered on a classic campus feel.

For long-term value, both schools can lead to strong outcomes, but debt matters more than small prestige differences. Between these two, there is not a gap in national reputation large enough to justify substantially higher borrowing on its own. Unless GWU’s DC access clearly matches your academic and career plans, Tulane is usually the better value choice.
